The Washing Machine Project

Launched: March 2024 Status: Phase 1 completed - Thank you! Every boarding pupil at Dr Graham's Homes lives in a unique Cottage on the campus; it's part of DGH's famous "Cottage System" of accommodation. But with approximately 20 children in each building, there's a huge amount of washing to be done! Unfortunately, not all the DGH Cottages have their own washing machines. That's why we launched the Washing Machine Project in March 2024. We wanted to ensure that every Cottage had access to its own machine, so that the boarding children could comfortably keep on top of all their washing and drying needs. We initially earmarked four machines for the girls’ cottages that didn’t already have one. Each one cost between £100 to £120. We are delighted that the appeal raised just under £500, both from supporters and also from the staff of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kolkata. The new machines are twin tubs with a separate spin dryer, which allows the children to part-dry their clothes before they hang them out. This is especially important in the monsoon season, when nothing dries very easily. At some point in the future, we may proceed with Phase 2 - providing washing machines for the boys' cottages.
