Glynis grew up at the Homes in the 1970s while her parents were teachers there. This is her story.
“I studied in Dr Graham’s Homes and was from the batch of 1973, and I can honestly say that I loved my time there. It was a constant adventure! We were very lucky to have had such a wonderful childhood, carefree and exciting. I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of school life and took part in all the extracurricular activities, and was chair of the inter-school debating society.
Although we were staff children, we still got completely immersed in school life. My dad, Mr W.R. Pratt, was the senior teacher in English & Literature and my mum, Hope Pratt, was the special needs teacher. We were fortunate to live in several homes in DGH: Cargill, Bhutan Lodge, New Flats & Bencraig. The values and work ethic that we learnt in school have stood us in good stead in our adult life. I also made friends for life and still keep in touch with my batch mates from 1973. We have had several reunions over the years and many of us have visited DGH for these reunions.
DGH is unlike any other school. No matter when you studied there, when you meet an OGB, times fade away and we love reminiscing about the ‘good old days’. I also married an OGB, Charlie Johnson, who was from the batch of 1970! We managed to take our three children to DGH too. They were astounded at the beauty of Kalimpong and understood why we had such close connections to the school. The pandemic has unfortunately meant that we have not been able to visit recently, but we hope we can make a trip sometime in the future."
